Wednesday May 28th

from guest blogger Julia...

Today in class we finished the North Korea Video in which we learned the imminent death of all Americans due the great power of North Korea. We also saw some great examples of how we should be treating the Great Leader, Mr. Gillis (according to Mr. Gillis). Remember that the final is tomorrow for 0 period and maps are due on the day of the final.

Tuesday May 27th

A "Classic" from Joyce....

Tuesday, May 27

Today was a wonderfully short day we started by watching Inside North Korea, featuring Lisa Ling, a National Geographic host. The video detailed some of the conditions and mindsets of those who live in North Korea and documented the medical team who had to work in poor conditions to restore eyesight of the blind. Maps are due on the day of the final test. A 94.5% will allow you to "skip" (happy? Happy? Good. Douchepickles.) the final. Zero period should begin planning for their awesome potluck.

Friday May 23rd

From guest blogger Joyce...

Friday, May 23

Today in class we watched another video on Tiananmen Square and Tank Man, detailing the events at Tiananmen Square, and several theories by journalists on what had happened to Tank Man after his now famous act of protest. We also turned in the homework from yesterday. Even better, we have homework to complete over the three day weekend (Oh joy, what way to relax from school but to do school work?)

Thursday May 22nd

from guest blogger Joyce...

Thursday, May 21

The beginning of class today was spent discussing the final, and the grade needed to "skip" the final (oh, technicalities); a 94.5%. The maps tests will be included as part of the final, so those who "skip" the final do not have to take the maps tests. However, the maps themselves are still due on the day of the final.
We spent the rest of the period watching the beginning of a very informative video on the Cultural Revolution in China, and equally informative commercials that added some colour to the screen every ten minutes.

Tuesday May 20th

from guest blogger Joyce...

Tuesday, May 20

Zero period began by discussing the grade of a certain person named Noah. Specifically, we began by discussing the grade needed in order to "skip" (just in case someone actually reads the blog) the final, and how with just one more point, Noah would be in the range to "skip" the final. Zero period was enraptured by Mr. Gillis's outline of how Noah would, by completing the rest of the assignments, be able to receive the necessary points and "skip" the final. After the very personal and moving story, we began day one of a mandatory 2-day presentation on digital literacy where ironically, one of the topics were privacy and how to respect it (online, of course).

Monday May 19th

from guest bloggers Joyce and Julia....

from Joyce -
Monday, May 19
Class started with us handing back (Or receiving, freeloaders.) corrected papers. Remember to check your PIV to make sure there are no discrepancies between the grade you received and the grade inputted into the PIV (like a very humble student who Mr. Gillis loves dearly found) so that if possible, you can "skip" the final (YES). We then finished the documentary "Inequality for All" and also finished the notes on Communism.

From Julia -

Today started with finishing up the video with Robert Reich from Friday. Then we moved on to the Communism Powerpoint, where Mr. Gillis displayed his amazing pronunciation of Chinese names. Today's homework is Textbook page 676 Q's 1-5 and will be due on Tuesday.
Remember that we only have 13 days of school left, which is 10 days closer to the final.

From guest blogger Joyce...

Friday, May 16th

Today in class we finished (most of) the documentary Inequality for All, on the widening income inequality in America, which we started yesterday. Homework from yesterday was also turned in. Remember (though if you don't know by now it is highly improbable that you read the blog) that the homework from this chapter is due the very next school day.
Congrats on the freshman class for coming in 4th place (OUT OF FOUR!!!!)

Thursday May 15th

from guest blogger Joyce...

Thursday, May 15

Today in class, we started on the documentary Inequality for All, a documentary on the widening income gap between the upper class and middle class. With Robert Reich, Chancellor's Professor of Public Policy at UC Berkeley, the income inequality is explained in this video (which will likely span two class days).
Homework is due tomorrow (as always) and, as a certain student who Mr. Gillis loves dearly demonstrated, be sure to check your PIV

Friday, May 9

In class today, we started by reading a document on Adam Smith's viewpoints, answering questions that checked for comprehension, and turning them in. Tuesday May 6th

from guest blogger Joyce…

Tuesday, May 6

We started class by correcting yesterday's Chapter 29 Tests. Jiayin Lu set the curve at 40 out of 40 in zero period. Those who did not receive at least 79% will be having a personal, life changing lunch date with Mr. Gillis to retake it within a week. As usual, the homework for Chapter 30, the introduction chapter, is due on the day of the Chapter 30 Test.
After correcting the test, we watched two videos: Look Up (which, coincidentally, Mr. Gillis got from Ms. Oddson, who got it from Ms. Sarkar, who also showed it today) and a part of Gordon Ramsay's Great Escape where we watched as he, like the stereotypical American tourist (although he isn't American), swam and splashed in a holy meditating pool.

Monday May 5th

from guest blogger Joyce...

Monday, May 5

Happy Cinco de Mayo- the Mexican holiday that is possibly celebrated more in the USA than anywhere else.
Today, we took the Chapter 29 Test on Southern Asia. We also turned in the last of the homework from Chapter 29. Those who finished the Chapter 29 Test early (the majority) began the homework for Chapter 30, on the rest of Asia. The work will be collected on the day of the Chapter 30 Test (Monday 12th) because it is an intro chapter. Tests will be corrected tomorrow.

Thursday,  May 1

Today was the first day of May (those who don't have allergies are happy now). We started class with a group activity on analyzing Gandhi quotes and sharing our favorites with the rest of the class. Each individual quote analysis was turned in. We finished class while watching a movie on micro-loans in Bangladesh and how it was impacting the poor villagers of this desperately poor country. Homework, which is to be turned in the day after assigned, was turned in also. The PDFs are on the class website.
